Reflection is a learning experience in itself. It allows us to critically assess the ways in which we can improve. This is extremely valuable in the context of medical education where we need to draw learnings from both academic training and medical practice. Earlier this year, Professor Olle ten Cate delivered a public lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland titled, What is a 21st Century Doctor? Professor ten Cate took time to reflect on how medical education has changed over the last century, and how it could evolve in the future.

Industry recognition is always appreciated, particularly in the fast moving arena of technology, and the critical sector of healthcare. We are thrilled to receive two more award nominations in 2019, from the Irish Healthcare Awards. The nominations are for Best Use of IT and Excellence in Healthcare Management.  Hosted by the Irish Medical Times, the Irish Healthcare Awards celebrates its 18th year as Ireland’s leading medical awards. Winners will be announced at an awards evening in Dublin in November 2019.

We are delighted to share more good news from Galway in 2019. Qpercom has been awarded a national tender in Norway to deliver Qpercom Observe to higher education institutions. The tender represents the four major universities in Norway; University of Oslo, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Tromsø (The Arctic University of Norway) and the University of Bergen. It may also include UNIT, the Norwegian Directorate for ICT and Joint Services in Higher Education and Research. The successful outcome of the Norwegian tender comes just after winning the prestigious e-Assessment Award for Best Use of Summative Assessment for Observe.

When writing unit testing it is always good practice to mock the database with test data to achieve the F.I.R.S.T principles of unit testing.

With only a few models in an application it is not too difficult to mock the necessary test data, but when your application grows it starts to become unmanageable. For example, can you imagine mocking data for an application with over 200 models?

The e-Assessment Association recently hosted their international award programme, the e-Assessment Awards in London. The association highlights advancements in e-assessment across all sectors and industries. We are thrilled to announce Qpercom was selected as winner for ‘Best Use of Summative Assessment 2019’. Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) is changing the delivery and assessment of medical education in healthcare institutions around the world. CBME is outcome-based education, focusing on what is attained in terms of knowledge, skill, behaviour and attitude. This brings a wider focus to education, not just what is learned from the actual teaching process.

Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are an effective measuring tool for these competencies. An EPA is a core unit of professional practice which can be entrusted to a trainee as soon as they have demonstrated the competence to conduct the task without supervision. Qpercom developed an EPA Management System, Entrust, to provide a digital solution for storing and managing EPAs. An accompanying work-based assessment app measures the trainee feedback, to complete the feedback loop between trainer and trainee.
